Methane Gas

Gas that we should worry about: methane. Methane Gas is released from natural processes like decomposition, but human activities like agriculture and waste management have increased the amount in our atmosphere significantly. While there’s less methane in the atmosphere compared to carbon dioxide, it is 25 times better at trapping heat.


Land use is another significant contributor to climate change. Deforestation and the conversion of wild spaces for agricultural or urban use not only release large amounts of carbon stored in trees and soil, but also reduce the planet’s capacity to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. In addition, agriculture, particularly livestock farming, contributes significantly to methane emissions, as mentioned earlier.

So, what can we do – A Step Towards Solutions:

  • Decarbonise the economy: The most significant solution is a global shift towards clean energy sources that don’t release carbon dioxide, like wind, solar, hydroelectric, and nuclear power. Decarbonise the transportation sector by promoting electric vehicles and improving public transit is also crucial.
  • Improve energy efficiency: While transitioning to renewable energy sources, we also need to use the energy we have more efficiently. This can be accomplished through actions such as improving the energy efficiency of buildings and appliances, improving vehicle fuel efficiency, and promoting energy-saving practices.
  • Sustainable agriculture: Adopting more sustainable agricultural practices can help reduce emissions from agriculture. This includes reducing the reliance on synthetic fertilisers, promoting soil health to absorb more carbon, and supporting diets with a smaller carbon footprint, such as plant-based diets.
  • Reforestation and afforestation: Planting trees and preserving existing forests can absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and store it in the form of biomass. It’s a natural and cost-effective way to mitigate climate change.
  • Waste management: Landfills are a significant source of methane emissions. Reducing waste, recycling, and composting can help decrease methane emissions.
  • Advocate for climate policies: Individual actions can make a difference, but systemic change is necessary to fully address the issue. Support policies and politicians who are committed to addressing climate change.
  • Education and awareness: Educate yourself and others about the reality of climate change, its causes, and what can be done about it. Public support and understanding are critical for driving the necessary policy and behavioural changes.  

Remember, though, that while individual actions are important and should not be discounted, large-scale institutional, systemic, and policy changes are crucial to truly mitigate the impacts of climate change. It’s a collective effort that requires the cooperation of all countries, sectors, and individuals around the world.
